Medina of Fez Get to know it Better

The name of the city Fez is incomplete without adding Medina on the back. Actually, it is called Fez Medina. In ancient times, it was recognized as a non-European city in Africa or the Middle East. Well, the city has lived up to its standard fairly.
Medina is known as “city” in Morocco. Fez happens to incorporate two of the main markets in the city namely the Fes-el-Djedid (new). It was built in the 14th century. The second one is the Fez-el-Bali, popularly known as the old market. It was actually built towards the end of the late 8th century. It was built by the 1st Muslim Dynasty. They were known as the Idrissids. It was the old medina that sits on the banks of the Fez River. According to the survey, locals claimed that the Kairouiyine Mosque which was constructed during the reign of Yahya ibn Muhammed is among the oldest ones based in Africa. In 1859, the University of Karueein was founded, which then became the oldest university in the whole world.
The mainstream of the Fez Medina’s population incorporated refugees from surrounding Moorish dynasties. The names of these dynasties were Andalusia, Kairouan, and Tunisia. Every group here established its own regions within the medina. These were usually parted by geographical markers, like the river or neighboring hills. Historically saying, Fez was a melting pot of North African Muslims and Jews. They all maintained a permanent resident in the Mellah district. Today, people born in Fez usually have lighter skin tones, blond hair, and even green and blue eyes. The women here are especially very beautiful. If you even plan a visit Morocco, take a trip from Marrakesh to Fez via Sahara.
